Random Craziness

Blog # 1

Written by Jennifer Jeske

It all started at 8:00am at the Ministry Center of BRCC…

Everything was all fine going through the airport. We had time to relax and took off a little late to New York. The late takeoff ended up giving us only 4 MINUTES to get to the connecting flight. We made the flight, but we didn’t know if our luggage made it. The flight went well and was uneventful. We landed and went through customs without any problems. Life was great and we had no major glitches….yet. Well, our luggage never got on our flight with us and the language barrier did cause some problems in filling out forms for the lost luggage. Pastor Vitale had sent Alex to help up get safety to Kharkov and help in any translating issues. Eventually, we finally got on the bus to go to Kharkov. The bus ride was very, very long but most everyone was sooo tired from traveling that we slept. About an hour into the drive the engine overheated and we had to stop to let it cool down. Both Pastor Vitale and Alex were extremely helpful when we ended up getting into a car accident about 15 minutes from where we would get off. Pastor Vitale helped put us up because the bus had actually side swiped the car and was unable to move at all with a report and other paperwork. Needless, to say we were rather hungry because we ate dinner and breakfast on the plane but that was about it. We drove to the hotel and dropped off our stuff (the little that there was). It was then time to walk to dinner. We went to the downtown area and at ate a 24-hour cafĂ©. Everyone loved the food. It was all a combination of Russian/Ukraine twist American foods like baked potatoes, steak, grilled chicken, burritos, and others. The city is really beautiful at night and it cooled down a lot so walking back was comfortable. We finally got to sleep around 1:30/2:00 AM because of how long traveling and everything had taken. The day wasn’t over for us. We enjoyed sleep until 4am when we were woken up that our luggage arrived. It was a relief and answer to prayer but we were all too tired to enjoy it. Everyone has gotten all their bags except James, Faith, Melissa, and Mr. Borick. Pastor Vitale had sent enough extra toiletries and has taken amazing care of us that they have no worries and are by God’s grace here enjoying this beautiful country. We enjoyed breakfast this morning which was different from us having bread, jam, cereal, cheese, meat, coffee, and hot tea. It was again great food and everyone is adjusting to the culture and enjoying the Ukraine. The service we attended this morning was also amazing because we got to sing songs in 5 different languages since there are many gifted international students. I personally liked the Chinese group that performed. We met many of the local students and people we will be working with this week. I think that was all the highlights from the past couple days. I just want to say the prayer and the comments you guys have been making are amazing and encouraging. I hope all the families back home are not worried because we are in God’s hand and the best thing you can do it pray for the team, New Hope church, and the evangelizing we will be doing this week. O ya and the water ( I forgot) is all carbonated and slightly salty which is an extra lovely perk to being in the Ukraine! (haha- it’s hot so we are drinking A LOT of water). Paka (Good bye in Russian). Hopefully we can write again tomorrow.

P.S. Sorry. The time difference is 7 hours ahead so it’s an adjustment.

The pictures are great! And Jen, reading your post was great too...like a breath of fresh air. Or should I say like a cup of cold salty fizzy water??

God has a way of doing interesting things with people who are totally yielded to Him. Great to hear that it has begun.

Everyone was asking about you in church this morning and people are praying for the remaining luggage. Dr. Ken Mahanes from PBA gave a great message.

Happy Father's Day, Jeff, James, and Vitaly. Students, make sure James doesn't miss his new baby too much today...maybe cry a little or throw up on him to make him feel at home, ok?

Praying for you. "Yock tah bah loo bloo" (at least that's how my Ukrainain mom says I love you).

Matt,

This is Brett with Mom editing over my shoulder---you know how that is. Anyway, we read the blogs and your email. From the texts and Jen's post we were able to get the gist of the story before hitting the email. Frankly, I'm surprised that, on four hours of sleep in a bus in Eastern Europe you're evangelizing and not just throwing people out the windows. The Roughness-Goodness balance here doesn't seem to be in your favor.

While everyone else is writing about Christian, Godly encouragement, I'm taking the low road and gloating since I've never made it past Canada: Jeff and I saw Ratatouille last night (Sneak peak; best movie of the year). So, uh, there.

I'm not surprised Lucas is at home with the spicy water. It seems like his kind of thing. Try to keep him from scavenging on street corners. He's supposed to witness to the beggars, not try to help them turn a third-quarter black market profit.

Also, keep Joey from breaking his leg in an impromptu soc--uh, football match to the death. I'm fairly certain the way to the Ukraine's heart doesn't lie in establishing athletic dominance.

Tyler and Caleb---just make sure they don't blow anything up. Those buildings are valuable. Seriously.

Oh, and go easy on the Ukrainians. You wouldn't be nice either if the shining moment in your country's history was the three days between the Nazis leaving and the U.S.S.R. moving in.

As for this part---"We arrived in harkov eight hours later and without any clothes"---hey, if you've got it; flaunt it, baby. You can share the goodness with Eastern Europe; don't be selfish.

So, I guess keep up the good work and sleep when you can. Remember, they've got the fever. And the only prescription is more cowbell.

Here's Mom.

---Brett

Thanks for all the details Jen. We're praying for you all. Tony mentioned the Ukraine trip this am.
I'll pray for some interest from the Ukrainians & others you meet, Matt. I remember how uninterested I was before the Lord saved me. A lot of seeds are being planted and who knows what God will do?
Lots of love, Mom

Hi Tori,

It is so fun to hear from you all! Tori, you looked a BIT exhausted in one of the pictures, so get plenty of sleep!

I am so glad that you are having this experience. Remember to listen to that still, small voice of Jesus as you interact with folks there. He will use you for His glory when you first listen to Him.

You will be a blessing! Can't wait to hear more from you all!

Love,

Mrs. Weil

Hi Jenn and the entire team...your post was encouraging! Your safe arrival in noted! and your good food! WOW did you sing in five languages...That is very international! We will keep praying for you all as you continue to grow and trust in Jesus and share the Gospel. Continuing to pray that the missing luggage will arrive intact and quickly to those in need. This adventure will certainly be an exciting and memorable chapter in your lives. The pastor today mentioned it is not the posture you pray in but the attitude of the heart! Only God knows your heart attitude as you serve in the U.S. or the Ukraine. We had rain today and Dad had white pizza tonight....Happy Father's day to James, Mr Borrick and Vitale. Love to all...Ernie and Lucy said ruff ruff...Luke made cookies and they were good! Mom says I love you Jenn and hugs to the rest of the team...Sleep Soundly and Smile
